Plantar Fasciitis and Massage – Erica Whitman

Plantar Fasciitis and Massage – Erica Whitman

Plantar Fasciitis is a painful injury to the ligament attached at the bottom of the food. It is often caused by repetitive overuse, improper support or too much weight. The result is a burning painful inflammation in the sole and arch of the foot. Most often, it is worse in the morning and gets better throughout the day as you slowly stretch it out with movement.

Primarily, we suggest cutting down on the any activity that may be aggravating the fascia. That is if you are finding the cause of the problem to be from over use activity such as running, cycling etc. Secondly, we suggest treatment!

Massage is a great way to help release the scar tissue and reduce tension and inflammation. Deep tissue work can help breakdown the adhesions at the attachments, increase blood flow to the area, and help stretch out the muscle and ligaments

Massage to such painful areas may cause tenderness after the massage, however its short term (one to two days at most), and the results are worth it. Once the fascia gets manipulated and stretched out the pain should go away (this may take more than one session depending on how much tension and adhesions are built up). Your therapist may also give you stretches and ideas on how to prevent it from returning in the case it is from misuse, or improper footwear.
