Trapezius muscle – Sarah Fischer

Trapezius muscle – Sarah Fischer

One of the largest, superficial back muscles is your trapezius muscle. This muscle has 3 different areas of muscle fibers that all have different functions. You have your upper fibers, middle fibers and your lower fibers. It could be compared to a diamond shape that is attached at the base of your occiput (protuberance at the back of your skull), comes down laterally on both sides with tendon attachments to your acromion and along your scapula, then the lower fibers come from your scapula which covers a large portion of your back along the thoracic region and tapers longitudinally to your lower thoracic spine.

This dynamic muscle covers a variety of movements from your neck, scapulas and thoracic area. With clients and treatments, depending on the area of concern and movements involved, you can often break down the muscle in the 3 levels to focus on for treatments and home care exercise. Each area can be specifically targeted for strengthening and stretching, as well. Due to its large coverage and involvement with various movements, it is very common for it to get irritated and will need a little TLC every now and then. Just like most muscles posture plays a big part of this.

I have mentioned before and will always say that when you feel an area is not functioning as well as you feel it once has, or causing discomfort, even if it is mild, it is always better to get it looked at sooner than later.
