Infant Massage – Nicole Gillett

Did you know that massage isn’t just for adults?

Infant massage can either be done by a registered massage therapist or, right at home, by you. Doing it at home can help build the bond between baby and parent. There are many benefits of infant massage: it can help the baby sleep better, facilitate crying, relaxation and build a stronger bond with you. Studies have also shown that it can help stimulate your baby’s brain, helps lift their mood and it can also help you with postnatal depression.

Baby massage isn’t just for the mommy to do but daddy can do it too. Some daddies find themselves feeling left out of the hands on part when it comes to a new born. Doing a regular massage can make it a routine for both daddy and baby to spend time with each other.

The best time to do the massage is between feedings so the baby isn’t too full or hungry. Most people do it after bath time and before bedtime feeding. It helps the baby wind down and get ready for bedtime. There are many things to take into consideration when doing an infant massage. Make sure you have a thick blanket and towel for the baby to lie on, be sure to sit on the floor and do it on a surface that the baby won’t fall off of. Be sure there are no distractions  (TV, pets, phones, etc). You will need towels, blankets, clothes for after and the usual diaper changing supplies.
