Connective Tissue – Erica Whitman

Connective Tissue – Erica Whitman

When most people think of the makeup of their bodies, they think bones, muscles, organs and skin. But have you ever wondered what fills in the space between? The body is a fascinating make-up of so many different systems and pieces, but the one thing that holds everything together is our Fascia. It’s like the glue that holds us together.

Fascia is the tough connective tissue that surrounds every single muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel, and organs of the body, all the way down to the cellular level. This forms a web like connection all the way through the body from head to toe.

Think of it like a hammock, if you take one corner and grab a piece of the rope and pull it, it will slowly pull on all the ropes until you are affecting even the opposite corner. This is how connective tissue in our body works.  Therefore if you have scar tissue built up from a trauma or chronic problem… it can slowly spread tension throughout the body.

This is another reason why Massage can be so beneficial. We can manipulate the fascia through Massage Therapy. I often describe facial work to clients by saying it’s like working with taffy. If you stretch and move the tissue over and over it warms up and becomes more pliable. Once we get the fascia moving around and stretched out we can manipulate it and release the holding patterns it may have causing the client pain and discomfort.

If you’ve ever heard of Myofascial release techniques, this is what we do. It’s a manipulation of connective tissue, most often done with little to no lotion. Most people find it very relaxing and enjoyable.
