Communication – Erica Whitman
I recently just read an article about the 100 things Massage Therapists can do wrong. It was taken from a survey of people, asking them what they did not like about their treatments. Although many of them were what should be obviously wrong, or odd for a therapist to do; what really compelled me to write this blog, was comments like these:
-too much pressure
-too little pressure
-too quiet, felt uncomfortable
-talked to much
-didn’t explain what they were doing
– explained play by play what they were doing, couldn’t relax.
-spent too much time draping
-didn’t drape well enough, felt exposed
– etc etc etc.
These comments are all things that can definitely affect your relaxation and enjoyment of your treatment. However these things are all things that should easily be remedied by a simple statement.
A good therapist should always check in with you. Otherwise how do we know how you are feeling? They should ask you “How is the pressure” every now and then, drape properly and effectively (as too much time is better spent, than a quick exposure). And they should always try to mold to the individual with their quietness or chattiness.
The crucial thing about all this, is the communication. What everyone needs to know… is that everyone is different. Therefore, although there are signs for us to pick up on, we need to relay on your honesty to lead us sometimes.
NEVER worry about not communicating your thoughts because you don’t want to insult the therapist. If you want to relax and not talk, just tell us. We are happy to give you your quiet time. Same goes for pressure, let us know if you want more or less. We would much rather have you leave happy with your treatment, than have you leave upset that the therapist wasn’t strong enough, or maybe you would never go back because they hurt you.
The bond between a therapist and a client must be of mutual trust and honesty. We vow to honor and respect every one of you as individuals, do our best as health care professionals, and confidentially be there for you. All we ask in return, is to communicate your opinions with us, so we can provide all that service to you to the best of our ability. Communication is key!
