What is Plantar Fasciitis? – Sarah Fischer

It can be tricky to pronounce, but oh how common this condition is. I thought I would write about it due to the fact that a lot of my clients have been diagnosed with it but also I had one who said they never knew they had it, they just thought it was normal to always wake up and have your feet hurt…. no, it’s not.

Your plantar fascia is a thick, broad band of tissue that connects to your heel and runs along the bottom of your foot and connects to your toes. When this tissue gets irritated, inflamed or is beginning to break down, you will often feel it as heel pain and may be tender to touch the bottom of your heel and along the side.

Most will feel these symptoms first thing in the morning when getting out of bed when you take your first few steps, once you have warmed up the tissues and get moving the pain often will reduce. You may find that it occurs throughout the day after you have been seated for a long period of time and go to get up, that sharp pain in your heel may return again, or if you tend to be on your feet for long periods of time during the day, sometimes even post workout. Having footwear that provides adequate arch and foot support is very important in reducing the chance of developing plantar fasciitis.

It is common for runners to be diagnosed with this, but even non runners can develop this condition, and as the seasons change our footwear change and not always for the better, flats, sandals, winter boots etc. This is also common through pregnancy, as weight-bearing changes occur and your pregnancy develops, you will begin to feel the effects all over, and your feet won’t hesitate to let you know they are tired.

Massage therapy is a great way in helping reduce this pain by breaking up the tension, scar tissue, and stretching out your tissues and muscles through your feet and calves. Your massage therapist can also go through stretches and exercises that will help with reducing the pain and keeping those tissues healthy and mobile.

At Adica Massage Clinic, we will adapt to suit your needs! We offer a variety of different massage types including: therapeutic massage, hot stone massage, couple’s massage and even pregnancy massage.
