Sciatic pain, also referred to as sciatica, is a very common symptom that is felt in the lower back – buttock area and often refers down to your posterior thigh.
At times, it may be felt all the way down into your foot. This pain is often characterized as a sharp, burning pain that can range from mild to severe and can really limit your movement and activity in some cases. People may also experience a numb or tingling sensation as well. With a mild to moderate irritation, symptoms may begin to resolve after a short period of time with a series of treatments, such as massage or physiotherapy.
Your sciatic nerve branches out from your lumbar spine and travels down your hip and posterior leg on both sides of your body and often times, it’s only the one side that becomes irritated. Sciatic pain or sciatica is often just the symptom of a primary cause, such as compression through the disc or muscle causing irritation to the nerve. This can be an acute symptom, but depending on the cause, it may develop into chronic pain.
Depending on the cause of your sciatic pain, massage is a great way to bring relief. It can help relax any muscles and tissues surrounding the nerve and open up the pathway so all areas involved can move freely and decrease any restrictions that may be causing irritation. Your massage therapist can also provide homecare to prevent flare ups or assist when the nerve becomes aggravated. Depending on what assessments show, a referral to your doctor may be recommended with concern of the severity of pain and what may be causing it.
